Belize Lime Caye Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System is the second largest barrier reef system in the world. It includes the Belize Barrier Reef with an area of 620 square miles and a length of 160 miles. It runs along its coast from the island of Ambergris Caye to the Sapodilla Cayes Islands on the Guatemalan border. Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve is a national protected marine reserve. It was established in 1996 and is administered by the Fisheries Department of Belize. The reserve includes 14 sand and mangrove cayes. From the area of 76 square miles of reserve, only 2 % represent a land. One of the islands is Lime Caye, which lies approximately 40 miles east of Punta Gorda in the Gulf of Honduras. The caye is one of the southernmost islands in the Sapodilla Caye island chain near the southern terminus of the Belize Barrier Reef. The size of this island is about 200 yards in length and 100 yards in width. It is private, the owner is the Garbutt family from Punta Gorda.
